There is a temptation for organisations like ours dipping their toe into the world of social media to take the safe route of using the medium as a vehicle to impart corporate messages or service information which in itself may be useful , but is it what today’s communities want?. The top down approach whilst worthy lacks the involvement inherent in engagement and it is this we want to achieve. William Perrin in his blog http://talkaboutlocal.org.uk/mutualsupportforums/ asks the question “can advice providers tap into the potential of self help networks online” and whilst recognising that “top down advice cannot be replaced by horizontal forums ” good mutual support forums can be very powerful . The inclusiveness and supportivity of these sites is what we are trying to achieve whilst maintaining the integrity , trust , and reputation of our service. How can we achieve this balance?
We all know someone who find’s the thought of using a Computer a bit scary and is nervous about using the Internet?
They probably say I’ve never used one all my life why should I start now?
It is natural to feel like that at first….. and we don’t want them put off by those feelings ………..As you know there are so many positive experiences to be had using computers and being on-line AND we want to help them discover this for themselves :
last year we ran ‘taster ‘sessions supported by Northamptonshire Library service and Barclaycard volunteers at Weston Favell & Central Library which were very successful resulting in a number of people going on to take the FREE Online Basics computer course at CAB.
I am very pleased that both the Library Service and Barclaycard have agreed to support Online week again , and this year 5 town Libraries in Northampton together with Wellingborough Library are involved.
Please show anyone you know who might benefit the attached link and poster for details on how to book their place.
On the day our friendly volunteers will help them begin to discover a whole new world online…..They can show them how to keep in touch with family and friends, search for bargains, fill in applications , pursue hobbies and interests AND SO MUCH MORE ………..
